Croatia 2 July 2024

Finally set off from Marina Lepanto in Monfalcone, heading south to Croatia.

En route we noticed that there was water dripping from the new ScanStrut chartplotter box, which houses the new Axiom2 Pro9S plotter. On investigation the plotter hadn't been properly seated into its housing and last night's rain had got in. I contacted the Marina and they called back with an apology from Ricardo (B&G), who said he must have forgotten to tighten it up. He offered to drive to Umag if we were still there.

This came hard on the heels of yesterday's fiasco when we are half way to Umag, and Anne noticed lots of pink hydraulic fluid leading out of the console under the Volvo engine panel. We turned around and were back by 16:30 intube for Tech manager Christian and assistant Marco to investigate. They suggest that it is due to thermal expansion after overfilling. I was horrified and insulted to find that the Marina demanded payment for the extra night. Refused to pay.

So despite k look waving at 9 on Tuesday we did just 37nm the first day and found a stern-to mooring in Poreč (€67) where we cleared in to Croatia and got our Cruising Permit. (€108)

Unfortunately by there time we arrived Justin was feeling unwell with a temperature of 102F. I was worried it was sunstroke because he had been working incredibly hard in very hot temperatures to prepare the boat.

Anne and I went off to stumble round Poreč, and explored the ancient basilica founded in the 2nd century AD. We climbed the eight flights of stairs to the bell tower and got there in time to be deafened by the 7pm chimes with the bell swinging ponderously over our heads.
