This barograph trace shows the lowest pressure I have ever recorded in Reading, UK, where the pen fell off the bottom of the paper drum on 26 February 1989. I thought the children had played with it and broken the arm. Then I found it wasn't broken, so I called Francis Hayes at the ECMWF for a current pressure reading.
When I gave my estimated reading of 944, he said he would eat his hat if it was that low, and that it must be broken. He was quite a long time getting back to me........ apparently he'd been looking for a hat!!!
