Bourg des Saintes waterfront, Iles Saintes

We came ashore with the children and after walking into the village of Bourg des Saintes settled in a waterfront cafe for wifi and boissons, with a view of Tin Tin and the wonderful ship shaped Maison Bateau sticking out of the cliff.

Emily and Ruth catch up on correspondence

Later we made our way to a lovely beach   at Plage des Pompierres where everyone had a great time swimming, building sandcastles or relaxing in the shade of the trees.  There was a large group of young soldiers playing volleyball, and camped out under the pines.

Sunday 15th January

We went off with Tin Tin to explore other bays and ended up dropping anchor in Le Petit Anse and the second inhabited island, Terre Haut.   Here we snorkelled and then went ashore up step stairs to find a peaceful concrete road leading up to the village.  A little way up we found a superb children's playground with a gigantic Conch shell fifteen feet high that children could climb into! Lots of energetic play on the climbing wall and frames, sliding down the fireman's pole, clambering on the giant iguana and chatting to the geese. Beth loved the big wooden Jeep on springs.

Monday 16th January
Went ashore for a stroll with Kate, Ruth, Lottie, Beth and Emily down the street of colourful houses to the Grand Anse where we stopped and had refreshment overlooking the surf and the view across to the main island. I had a go at sketching Kate (apologies Kate!)

Grande Anse, Terre Haut
Eventually we waved goodbye to the lovely Iles Saintes, and sailed north up the west coast of Guadeloupe to Antigua, stopping on the way to swim at Pigeon Island where there is a bust of Jacques Cousteau on the sea bed, which we couldn't find!

Back in Antigua we anchored off Pigeon Beach, and enjoyed the sunsets over Montserrat, smoking away in the distance.
